The Montessori Method

Based on the teachings of 19th century educator
Maria Montessori, more than 5,000 schools in the
United States practice the Montessori Method, and
according to recent reports by the Washington Post,
more than 8,000 schools employ the method world
wide.

Montessori's ground-breaking methodology
emphasizes the development of each child as an
individual thinker and learner in an atmosphere of
self discipline, respect and compassion.

GMS allows students to progress at their own pace
while developing social skills, academic excellence
and a love of learning. All this is done in an
environment that fosters discovery, independence
and leadership.

GMS is a full member school of the American
Montessori Society. All of our teachers are certified
by either the American Montessori Society (AMS)
or the American Montessori Institute (AMI).
AMS is the largest Montessori organization in the
world, and provides excellent resources for parents
to learn more about the history, philosophy and
practice of the Montessori Method.

Benefits of Montessori at GMS

GMS offers students a curriculum through which they can develop a love of learning, solid academic skills, the ability to think creatively "outside the box." Students are encouraged to absorb information through problem-solving and inquiry, as opposed to memorization alone.

Students work individually and are given opportunities to collaborate with one another on group projects and to work with younger children as peer teachers. They also receive encouragement to pursue their individual passions and interests through classroom and after-school activities. Independent studies have shown that the benefits of a Montessori education last far beyond the duration of the child's Montessori years; articles such as the recent one in Science magazine show that Students also learn about the importance of being a productive member of a community, in the classroom and beyond.

We recognize that the success of the GMS community depends on the inter-relationships among its parents, students and teachers. Respect is an important principle to GMS. Its goal is to encourage students to respect themselves, as well as to respect the environment, the community and one another. It is GMS' philosophy that compassion, empathy, self-discipline and personal accountability must be encouraged to ensure students have the means to excel into the future.

Our Approach

GMS recognizes that a constant assessment of its performance is needed to maintain its commitment to the Montessori philosophy. At the same time, GMS notes the importance of keeping up with changing educational and cultural ideals.

Classroom environments are strategically designed to promote learning through the selection of practical materials and child-sized work stations. Teachers guide students through an understanding of individual personalities, strengths and needs. Only when students master a work are they permitted to continue with their studies. This ensures every child receives a customized education focused on individual achievement and the mastery of concepts instead of relying only on broad, test-based standards.

Classrooms are well-structured through a system of rules and guide lines that provide freedom within limits. Children internalize these rules throughout the school year, beginning with a thorough orientation process that helps to introduce the child to this exciting new environment in a thoughtful and reassuring way.

We recognize and meet the challenge of remaining true to the Montessori philosophy and the GMS mission in a rapidly changing world. By regularly assessing our programs in reference to non-Montessori learning standards, we ensure that the education received by our students is part of a solid academic foundation, no matter where they might go after leaving GMS.

What's happening at GMS:

Children's House I:
We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our caterpillars - they are due any day now and we will begin our observance of the process of metamorphosis. We are continuing to learn about the different groups of invertebrates, thanks to Dylan for bringing in jellyfish, a crab and a shrimp (all living) for us to study. We will focus on insects later this month, we have only to go as far as the playground for first-hand observation. With luck, we will end the year with a bang as the caterpillars change into butterflies that we will release outside, perhaps to see fluttering around the children's garden this summer!

Children's House II:
As the class slips into the final phase of the school year, it is so rewarding to watch the children work together and see how they have grown on so many levels. This is my thank you note to you for the joy of working with your children. Best wishes to our kidergarten graduates, Jake, Cooper and Elliott. Thanks to the LaCasse family for the wonderful CD and thanks again to Chip & Stephanie Davis for our beautiful bathroom renovation and painting the walls.

Elementary:
Both classes are preparing for a trip to Assateague island. Students will fish, swim, and cook on this group camping trip. We are studying the evolution of humans which will culminate in Cro-Magnon Day on June 8th. On Cro-magnon day we celebrate our ancestors with cave painting, food gathering, fire-making, and atl-atl throwing. Students will have a test on the Animal Kingdom on Friday, May 14th. Students are almost finished with their Mammal order habitats paintings. Upper elementary students will finish their research papers on early humans. They will study measurements, and also review area and volumes of geometric figures.
Lower elementary will finish studying the atmosphere with the presentations of their research papers on weather. They will make a hot air balloon together.
